What To Expect

Initial Consultation & Treatment

This is your chance to tell your story. We cover your presenting complaint(s), your past medical history, and then perform a thorough osteopathic assessment of movement and skilled palpation. Everything will be explained to you followed by a suggested course of treatment and any lifestyle changes or exercises that might speed things along.

Follow-up Treatments

Follow-up and maintenance sessions begin with a review and your chance to talk over how you are progressing. An assessment is performed to compare what we see, with what you feel, and further advice on how best to proceed will be discussed with you before treatment begins. You will never be asked to come in multiple times a week for dozens of visits.

Your Patient Journey

On your first visit you will be asked to fill in a very simple contact and preliminary information form and authorise your consent to examination and treatment. Please wear clothing that allows freedom of movement and inspection of your tissues as appropriate. You will always be able to decline any intervention, at any point.

Our initial consultation appointment is longer (up to 60 minutes). This is your chance to tell your story. We cover your presenting complaint(s), your past medical history, and then perform a thorough osteopathic assessment of movement and skilled palpation. Everything will be explained to you followed by a suggested course of treatment and any lifestyle changes or exercises that might speed things along.

Follow-up and maintenance sessions (45 minutes) begin with a review and your chance to talk over how you are progressing. An assessment is performed to compare what we see, with what you feel, and further advice on how best to proceed will be discussed with you before treatment begins.

Our discussions and assessments will have led to a plan of action. Typically we will be using combinations of stretching, joint mobilisations, massage, traction, springing, gliding and muscular contraction techniques. These are designed to effect the changes that we outlined from the movement assessments and palpation findings related to your specific and individual needs, rather than a routine.

Initial responses to treatment are often of more movement, less pain or simply a sense of relief. However when making changes to your tissues, in a similar way to trying an activity you haven’t done for a while, it is not uncommon for some to feel a little fatigued or achy for up to 48 hours as your physiology responds.

The first treatment is usually slightly shorter. We want to see how you respond immediately and over the following days before your next follow-up where we can then tailor your treatment responses more precisely.

Payment is taken at the end of each session. Most frequently by card or tap, with cash an option if you prefer. Receipts with full and extensive details for your insurance claims are emailed to you.

Follow-ups are discussed and recommendations will be given. Typically this is 7 to 14 days apart, unless you have an acute injury which may suggest 3 to 7 days. You should notice a difference within 2-3 sessions if not immediately.

You will also have been told how you can help yourself and as well as be given an explanation to help you understand why. Exercise and advice is given specifically, rather than endless lists of exercises. Specific advice gives specific results meaning we can learn more about “your patterns” rather than generic ones.

In the UK, data suggests that 2 to 6 visits are normal when you see an osteopath with many choosing to maintain their osteopathic health with maintenance care every 4 to 6 weeks.

Every treatment session is designed to help, no matter how much or how little, and you won’t be asked to come in multiple times a week for dozens of visits. It is always your choice and I will do my best to both help and advise.

You will be sent a comprehensive receipt via email after each session. Many extended health plans, including Canada Life, Blue Cross, Medavie, Sun Life, Manulife and Green Shield etc. cover osteopathic care when it is included in your benefits package. First, check to see whether osteopathy is part of your coverage. If so, there is a very high chance that you can. Direct-billing is currently only available for Blue Cross Medavie (Veterans Affairs and RCMP).
